VLC version 0.9.9a
« on: April 17, 2010, 15:43:55 »

If you want to have a movie player after an install, you might want to install VLC media player. But found version in Synaptic is 0.8.6, old.

I did the following (from a guide somewhere on the internet):

In terminal type:

Code:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 7613768D

In Synaptic go to Settings->Repositories

add
Code:
deb        http://ppa.launchpad.net/c-korn/vlc/ubuntu/  hardy  main
add
Code:
deb-src  http://ppa.launchpad.net/c-korn/vlc/ubuntu/  hardy  main

After adding those two sources press Reload.

After a search on vlc you will find vlc media player version 0.9.9a

If someone knows a better way, I missed something, a guide for installing version 1.0 just answer this post.

[edit]: If you have version 8.6 allready I think you have to fully uninstall that version before installing 0.99.

datiswous,

that's an interesting post of yours.
I found a recent thread on the VideoLAN forum
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=74614
where somebody succeeded in compiling VLC 1.0.5 for Hardy.
Looks like you might be able to find the necessary libs
(FFmpeg/libavformat, libdvbpsi) in this Baltix GNU/Linux repository:
https://launchpad.net/~mantas/+archive/ppa/+packages?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=hardy

Do you think you'll give it a try? Me, I would be lacking the skills.  Undecided

Yeah, I did read that post. I think I can do it, but I think I wait till I actually need it. I think It takes a lot of my time and I don't know if it's worth it. First I will check out the improvements in 1.05 over 0.99.
I did read somewhere that the improvement of version 0.99 over 8.6 is worth it.
